Family Voices coordinators in Pennsylvania have had a very busy year. They continue to partner with Title V, Children’s Hospital and the Academy of Pediatrics, receiving some compensation for their work. Family Voices also continues to actively participate in parent, disability and child advocacy organizations, DD council, HMO advisory board and the University Affiliated Program. Much time has been spent this year meeting with congressional delegations. Through one-on-one support, mentoring and information dissemination, they continue to assist hundreds of families throughout their state. The development of Medical Home Training for the state was truly a collaborative effort. Family Voices worked closely with the AAP, Shriners, state and local Title V programs, Children’s Hospital, Parent-to-Parent, Special Kids Network and managed care providers in this effort. Managed care in Pennsylvania has improved care coordination, and created heightened awareness of the issues and challenges families face. However, families must still work with a system in which care is not continuous, due to lack of available services and/or lack of transportation. As a result, families experience greater crisis level, emergency, high-cost situations and increased stress. Parents must be aggressive and savvy to navigate a system that lacks coordination.
