Family Voices
Faye Manaster Eldar
Phone: (773) 274-8683; (888) 950-8683 (Toll Free in IL)
E-mail: familyvoicesillinois@yahoo.com
Thanks to Family Voices of Illinois, families with children with special health care needs in Illinois can now call a toll free bilingual (English and Spanish) hotline to get information about services. 700 families are members of Family Voices, and more than 1500 families received newsletters with Family Voices information included during the past year. Families report that managed care is helpful to families in two ways: they have predictable monthly expenses and coverage for both preventive and well-child care. Access to appropriate therapies, particularly habilitative services, continues to be a problem with managed care, however. In addition, children routinely “fall through the cracks” due to lack of coordination, collaboration or cooperative agreements among multiple programs with a responsibility for CSHCN.
