Suit Therapy

How Space Age Technology is Changing Children’s Lives

Even though suit therapy looks complicated — almost space age — compared to other types of exercise programs, the design is based on simple principles.

The suit itself is made up of a breathable, soft support material. Each component is connected by a series of elastic bands. The bands are adjustable to securely and comfortably fit your child. By tightening or loosening each band, your child enjoys customized pressure and correct body alignment and muscle control. If her body needs more support in one area than another, you simply adjust the bands.

The main idea of this brace type fit is to improve and change the pressure on your child’s joints, ligaments, and muscles. This creates an improved pattern of movement that in turn normalizes the nervous system. The nervous system communicates information about her muscles, joints, and tendons.

By repeatedly placing your child’s body in proper alignment, she has a chance to develop and master new gross and fine motor skills. The process is similar to any other child learning how to sit, walk, or crawl; mastery is attained through repetition.

In Picture 1, the girl’s body is not properly aligned. In Picture 2, the TheraSuitâ„¢ places her body in correct alignment.

Before and After Therasuit

The main difference between your child and a child without CP is that your child will need to repeat an action—such as learning to crawl—many more times over. During this process, with his body properly aligned, his muscles are receiving “correct signals” on how to master his task. Over time, this process will become easier for your child.

TheraSuitâ„¢ Components:

  • cap
  • vest
  • shorts
  • knee pads
  • shoe attachments
Size Age Height
small 3-5 years old 34 to 44 inches tall
medium 5-8 years old 44 to 51 inches tall
large 8-12 years old 51 to 56 inches tall
x-large 12 to adulthood 56 to 66 inches tall
xx-large adults over 66 inches tall

Even though TheraSuitâ„¢ looks different, it is very comfortable and offers sizing to last your child well into adulthood. Of course, she’s sure to love the fun, bright colors too.

Is Suit Therapy Right for My Child?

Starting a new therapy can be exciting for both you and your child. However, before starting, you need to make sure this alternative is the best choice for her unique needs.

If your child suffers from any of the following conditions, please contact your child’s doctor before starting suit therapy:

  • Heart conditions
  • Uncontrolled seizures
  • Hip subluxation
  • VP shunt (hydrocephalus)
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney problems
  • High blood pressure

Even though TheraSuitâ„¢ is proven to be a safe and affective therapy method, pressure from the elastic cords can be potentially harmful to some children with additional delicate health issues.

Do You Want to Try TheraSuitâ„¢ Therapy for Your Child?

It’s no secret that special treatments designed to make your child’s life easier come at a high price. And your medical plan may not cover treatment such as suit therapy. But if this method works well for your child, you will want her to enjoy the benefits of it for years to come.

There’s only one way to find out for sure if your doctor and medical staff did everything they could have done to keep your baby from developing cerebral palsy in the first place. If your doctor failed you and your baby in any way, then you might be entitled to financial help.
