What Is Other Health Impaired Protection?

If you want your child to receive extra help at school, yet door after door is slamming shut in your face, don’t give up.

If your child was denied an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan, you may be able to get extra help for you child through an “Other Health Impaired” or OHI.

This catchall was designed to appease parents who insist on the provision of special education assistance to their children—children who, for whatever reasons, do not qualify for any other legally binding education document.

In order for your child to be considered for an OHI, she must meet the following criteria:

  • She must suffer from a chronic or acute health condition.
  • Her health condition must cause limited alertness in school due to limited strength, endurance, or the mental ability to stay alert. Or, she must have trouble paying attention in the classroom.
  • She must demonstrate learning difficulties.

Ensuring a proper education for your child should not be as difficult as it sometimes is for parents of disabled or impaired children. But often, depending on state laws where you live and the awareness amongst educators and likeminded parents in your community, it can be very difficult.
